LO4 Understand ethical, legal and regulatory issues associated with media products
P5
This requires you to demonstrate your understanding of chosen film/videogame by analysing:
- The texts impact and effect on the audience
- Relevant issues of representation
- Relevant legal and/or ethical issues
- Role of relevant regulatory bodies
TASKS
For the role of regulatory bodies you will need to:
- Complete the BBFC worksheet to find out in general about what the BBFC is and how it functions. You will find the material you need in the BBFC guide to classification. For videogames you will need to use PEGI.
- Use the search function to find out specific information about your chosen film. You can copy the information into a word/InDesign booklet and highlight if you agree with the classification or not.
For the films impact and effect on the audience and issues of representation you need to:
- Complete 2 analyses of key scenes from your film, these should analyse how cinematography, sound, editing and mise en scene generate meaning for the audience. You should also discuss the impact that the scene has on the audience. Use the 9 key frame template to help layout your analysis
- Use either IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes to see what the impact upon audiences has been. You should get 3 quotes from audience comments and discuss what you think these mean.
For relevant legal and/or ethical issues you should consider the role of health and safety. Two useful links for this are the HSE page on Film, TV and broadcasting and a document about the responsibilities whilst a film is in production.
