LO1 Understand media products and the institutions that create them

P2/M1/D1

You should select one product that is produced by the institution and analyse its:
  • Purpose
  • Genre
  • Form
  • Style
  • Content
  • Meaning
  • Production process
You should use this grid to help you with your initial research.

You will also need to create a flow diagram of the products production process. Depending on the type of product you have chosen this may be slightly different.

Most media products have a similar production process, this is as follows:
  • Development - This includes, scripting, finance, legal/ethical issues and organisational issues
  • Pre-Production - This includes budgeting, shooting/production schedule, storyboarding and casting
  • Production - Principal photography, second unit filming
  • Post-Production - Editing, graphics and effects, sound and music
  • Distribution - Release, publicity and promotion, merchandising
To meet the Merit criteria you need to make sure that your analysis uses the correct terminology and that you demonstrate a good understanding of the conventions of your products genre. You need to make sure that this is supported by examples from your chosen media product e.g. scene analysis.

To meet the Distinction criteria you need to make sure that your analysis shows a thorough understanding of the relationship between purpose, form, content and meaning within the intentions of your chosen media product.

The Merit and Distinction criteria will also be partly met with the detailed key frame analysis. It will help with style, content and meaning.
